How to Draw a Snowman

In today’s frosty tutorial, we are going to learn how to draw a snowman. It is a great family activity to build a snowman or create snow angels during Winter. You can make all kinds of projects with your Winter snowman clipart, including Christmas gift tags, greeting cards, planner stickers and sublimated mugs.

Step 1 - Create the Base Shape of Your Snowman

Begin by roughly sketching the base shape of the body. Use any sketching medium or light color that can easily be covered up.

First, sketch a circle for the head of your snowman. Below the head, sketch a second oval shape bigger than the head for the middle of the body. Next, draw a bigger oval below the middle one.

Step 2 - Add Details to Your Snowman Base Shape

With the base shape ready, we can add the arms, face, and decorations. Sketch whatever details and decorations you want to.

Draw the Arms

On either side of the middle oval section, draw lines for the arms of your snowman. Add a bend in the middle to give shape to the arms. They can be long or short or look more like twigs with three lines for the hand detail.

Sketch the Face

Sketch the eyes, nose, and mouth on your snowman's head. The face details were positioned in the center. The carrot nose was placed in the middle of the eyes. Right below the nose, we made a small V-shaped mouth.

Add a Scarf and Headpiece

Add your decorations, like a scarf and headpiece. For the headpiece, you can sketch anything from a Santa hat and beanie to earmuffs, or antlers. Draw your scarf between the head and the middle oval shape of your snowman. We have sketched these details in red to make it easier to follow.

Next, draw a pattern design on your fabric decorations. We added wavy lines to the scarf to create a striped pattern.

Step 3 - Create Outlines of Your Snowman

In this step, we are going to change over to a more permanent medium, like a pen or marker. Use this medium to outline your snowman, but leave out any overlapping sketch lines you don't want to be included.

We also added some wavy lines at the bottom of our snowman on either side for the snow.

Step 4 - Add Color to Your Snowman Drawing

For our final step, we are going to add color to our drawing. We chose a color palette of light yellow for the body and snow at the bottom. Red and green were added to our scarf and earmuffs, and orange for the nose. We also added light pink below the eyes to give our snowman blushing cheeks.
