You can use any art supply you have on hand to create your food illustration. Our drawing tutorials cater to everyone and can be used with traditional and digital media.
You can use pencils, crayons, paints, or Procreate to create your drawing. If you are using Procreate like we are, we have a great selection of premium Procreate brushes for your personal and commercial use projects.
Step 1 - Create Rough Sketches of your Jalapeno
To start drawing your rough sketches, you will need a pencil or a medium that is light in color. You can cover up your rough sketches when outlining or adding color if you aren’t able to erase them.
Create your Jalapeno Pepper Shape
Let us begin by drawing the shape of our pepper illustration. To create your jalapeno pepper shape, sketch a line that curves downward as we did in our example image below.

Above the bottom curved line, draw another line that curves upward on the left and down toward the right side. This will create the top (left) and bottom (right) of our jalapeno pepper sketch.

Add the Stem
On the right side of your sketch, draw the stem on the top of your jalapeno. To create the stem, simply sketch a long rectangular shape that curves towards the pepper (indicated in red) and draw a wavy line below it.

Complete your rough sketches by adding extra details, such as lines on the stem and pepper.

Step 2 - Trace your Jalapeno Sketch Lines
Swap your sketching medium for a permanent one to trace and define your jalapeno outlines. This can be an inking brush in Procreate, a pen, markers, or a black-colored medium.
Trace around your jalapeno stem sketches first, then line the pepper. Outline any extra sketches you want to make defined such as the lines on your drawing. Once you are done lining your pepper clipart, go ahead and remove your rough sketches.

Step 3 - Add Color and Depth to your Jalapeno
With your coloring medium, apply different shades of green to your jalapeno clipart. For our drawing, we are using two base shades and two darker shades to add depth to our pepper drawing.
Using your lightest shade of green, color the stem and make the pepper a darker green.

Add depth with darker shades from your base color. You can apply your colors the way we did below, create shading with Procreate texture brushes, or leave your drawing as is with the base colors.

Great work on your jalapeno drawing, it looks just like the real thing. We know your drawing will look great with other food illustrations. Be sure to check out our other guides such as how to draw a donut or draw strawberries to add a little sweetness to your art.
