How to Draw a Lily

Step 1 - Sketch your Lily Roughly

Let's get started with our drawing by using a sketching medium that is light and easy to erase or cover-up, like a pencil. Select a light-colored tool from your drawing supplies if you do not have a pencil.

Sketch the Pistil

In the center of your drawing space, draw several lines from the center with an elongated oval shape at the top. These lines will represent the stamen, the flower's male reproductive parts.

Add the Petals

Next, it's time to add the petals to the flower. Draw several large, curved lines coming out from the center of the flower. These lines should be slightly pointed at the ends to create a petal shape.

Make sure the petals are evenly spaced around the flower's center and overlap each other slightly. See our example image below.

Step 2 - Outline your Lily Sketch

Create your lily outline with a lining medium like an inking brush, gel pen, or permanent marker. Pay close attention to your overlapping sketch lines and trace your lily's pistil first. As you are creating your line art, add thickness to the stamen as we did below.

Then, define the lines of your petals. After going over your rough flower sketch, you can remove them.

For our lily illustration, we added extra line work to the petals. We drew simple lines that followed the curve of our petal shapes down the center. Feel free to add any additional details, such as drawing leaves around the petals.

Step 3 - Apply your Floral Colors

With your outlines done, switch to your coloring medium for our third and final step. Lilies are generally white, yellow, pink, red, and orange, but you can apply any color palette you want.

For our flower, we added multiple shades of colors to create depth. We absolutely love these versatile Procreate brushes for textured shading. You can even use the leaf stamps to create a bouquet with a few taps.
