How to Draw a Llama

Today we have another animal drawing guide, where we take you step-by-step through how to draw a llama. These charming animals have become popular in art and design. With your llama illustration, you can create colorful party decor, add to your animal clipart collection, and use it for sublimation designs.

You can use many mediums when designing your animal drawing, from traditional mediums like paint and wax crayons to digital apps such as Procreate and Photoshop.

Step 1 - Roughly Sketch your Llama

We will begin our tutorial by creating a rough llama sketch. You can use any sketching medium you have on hand, whether a pencil or a light-colored tool.

Draw the Base Shape

In your drawing area, sketch the base shape of your llama’s head and body. Start with a circle for the head. Then, leaving a gap, draw a large oval aligned to the right side, as we did in our example sketch below.

Create the Body

Above the circle, create arched shapes that are wider at the bottom for the ears. Next, sketch a shallow half circle for the muzzle on the bottom right side of the head.

Draw curved lines to shape the neck in the open space between the llama’s head and body. Then, add a small half-circle on the top left of the body to create the tail.

Underneath the llama's body, add the front and back legs of your llama. For our legs, we drew arched shapes that narrowed toward the bottom. You can also see on our guide image below that we extended the outer sidelines of the legs to flow from the body seamlessly.

Illustrate the Face

Add your llama face details inside the head and muzzle, such as an eye, nose, and mouth. Then create an additional line inside the ears.

Step 2 - Define the Llama Outline

Once you have completed your animal sketch, replace your sketching medium with a permanent one. You will need a dark medium such as a marker, pen, or Procreate ink brush to create your defined line art.

Start tracing the main outer shape of the head, neck, body, and legs. As you are lining your llama, add wavy lines to create the appearance of a fluffy coat.

Then, carefully outline the remaining details. Make sure only to define the sketch lines that you want to include in your drawing, as some of your sketches may not be necessary.

Clear any remaining sketches once you are done. Feel free to add any additional line details to finish your outline. We went ahead and added smaller scalloped lines to the coat.

Step 3 - Apply Color to your Artwork

It’s time to apply color to your llama using your chosen color palette. You will need at least three colors to add to the coat, skin, and nose.
