How to Draw a Mustache

Step 1 - Sketch your Mustache Shape

Using a sketching medium, we are going first roughly to sketch the shape of a mustache. As you are drawing, make sure to mirror your design from one side to the other. You can make use of grid paper, a ruler, or the symmetry Procreate drawing guides with assisted drawing to help.

Create the Shape

Begin by sketching two teardrop shapes right next to each other. The teardrop point on the left should point to the bottom left and the right shape to the bottom right. See our example sketch below.

Create the Curled End

Next, we are going to create the curled-up ends on our mustache. First, roughly sketch a curved line on either side at the bottom, going wider and as high up as the teardrop shapes.

Then, sketch the top of the curled-up shape of your mustache. Looking at our example, we drew a sloping line at the top that curves up to create the curved point.

Step 2 - Outline Your Mustache Rough Sketch

We have created the rough shape and can now make our outline more defined using a medium like a marker. Start outlining the outermost sketch lines of your mustache shape. For our outline, we made jagged edges in the direction of the curve at the bottom to create a hair effect.

With your mustache outline done, you can remove your rough sketches. If you plan to have a minimal line drawing, add strands of hair by drawing lines inside your mustache line art. Use the curves of your lines as a guide when making the inner hair lines. See our example image below.

Step 3 - Add Color to your Drawing

If you are adding color to your mustache, use two to three shades of color for the base fill and the hair effect. You can use any color medium, such as watercolor, Procreate chalk brushes, or apply solid colors. Begin by adding your base color first.

Then, use the other shades of your colors to draw hairs using lines inside your mustache.
