How to Draw a Donut

We are going to show you how to draw a delicious donut. Glazed or with colorful sprinkles, donuts are a popular dessert and super fun to draw for your food art. You can use your drawing to make sweet projects including cute packaging and printable birthday supplies.

For this donut clipart tutorial, you will need some art supplies like colored pencils, or any medium of choice. You will be sketching, outlining, and adding color to your dessert illustration. We are using Procreate as well as these Procreate brushes.

Step 1 - Create the Shape of a Donut

Let’s begin our tutorial by roughly sketching the oval shapes that make up our donut.

You can use any medium you have on hand to make your sketches. This can be a pencil that you can erase or a light color medium that you can easily cover-up.

Create the Outer Shape

Start by creating the outer shape first. Roughly sketching a large horizontal oval. This will be the top part of our donut drawing.

Then, sketch another oval of the same size. Place this oval shape overlapping the bottom of the first oval. We are going to use this to create a three-dimensional shape. See our example image below.

Complete the Donut Shape

In the center of your first oval, sketch a smaller oval for the donut hole. Position it near the top of the second oval shape. Then, connect the top and bottom ovals on either side with two lines.

Step 2 - Sketch the Donut Glaze and Sprinkles

In this step, we will sketch the toppings, like the glaze and sprinkles. You have complete creative freedom in this step to make any kind of topping that you want.

Create the Glaze

In the image below, we created a dripping glaze on the top oval. We drew a dripping glaze on the visible front side of the donut. For the rest of the donut edge, we sketched a wavy line.

Create the Sprinkles

On top of the glaze, create your sprinkles. For our example, we roughly sketched rectangles to create the little uneven shapes.

Step 3 - Outline the Donut Sketch

With our rough sketches complete, we can move on to creating permanent outlines. Begin with the outermost shape, then outline the glaze and sprinkles. We rounded the bottom of the rough sketch to give it a better shape.

Next, outline the remaining inner lines including the glaze and sprinkles. Remember, you only want to outline what you want to keep and ignore overlapping, unnecessary lines.

If you used a removable medium, you can now erase the rough sketches once you are done.

Step 4 - Add Color to Your Donut

We are now ready to begin adding color to our dessert clipart. Donuts are beige or light brown in color, with a rainbow of different glazes and sprinkles.

Fill the base of your donut and the glaze with a color of your choice. We use a beige color for the base and pink for the glaze.

Next, we used white with dark pink for our sprinkles. Darker shades of beige and pink were added for the shadows on our donut base and glaze. If you are using Procreate, we have a step-by-step tutorial on how to shade in Procreate.
