How to Draw a Shamrock

Looking for a quick beginner drawing tutorial? Then this shamrock drawing exercise is just for you. With an easy-to-follow guide, you will learn how to create your very own shamrock. Add your shamrock to all kinds of crafts, like creating a pattern design for sublimating on tumblers or adding text.

To create your shamrock clipart, you can use any medium you have available. This can be traditional art supplies or digital drawing apps.

For our drawing guide, we will use Procreate to create our sketches, outlines and apply color. We are also adding depth using texture brushes. You can even use Free Procreate brushes to make your illustration.

Step 1 - Create Rough Sketches of your Shamrock

In our first step, we will be using a sketching medium. You can use any removable or light color medium to make your rough sketches.

Let’s begin by roughly sketching three heart shapes with the tips connecting in the center. A shamrock looks similar to a clover leaf but it always has three leaves. You can make your leaves big with a little bit of space at the bottom to add the stem.

From the center of your leaves, sketch a long curved rectangular shape going down. This will be the stem of our shamrock.

Lastly, add a line through the center of each leaf sketch with curved lines on the sides for the veins.

Step 2 - Outline your Shamrock Sketch

With your lining medium, create a defined shamrock outline. You can use a pen or marker to trace your plant drawing sketch lines. Begin your outlines by tracing the outer sketch lines of your leaves and the stem.

Using Procreate and looking for a brush set to create your outline drawing? We highly recommend these Ink Procreate brushes with a bunch of different line brushes you can use.

Once you have lined the outer shapes of your plant illustration, line the vein details on your leaves. If you did use a removable drawing medium, you can go ahead and remove your rough sketches once you are done.

Step 3 - Add Color to your Shamrock

With our outlines done, let's move on to adding color to our shamrock drawing. Using any shade of green you want and color in your entire drawing. If you wanted to, you could add different green shades to the leaves and stem.

Next, add some shading and texture detail to your drawing. Using a textured brush in Procreate, we layered a darker shade of green to the center of our leaves, and veins.

You are now done illustrating your first shamrock. Change things up a bit by adding different colors or patterns to your leaf illustration to create a unique design. We can just imagine how cool your shamrock would look with a leopard print or some glitter textures.
